TIPS & TRICKS

Personalizing your gallery intro

Here is an easy way to put in a custom greeting, your name, contact information or anything else you want on the main page of your gallery.

The three new themes announced in this newsletter are different than previous themes in that they enable easy modification of the intro page animation background. All you need to do is change one image file (the existing animation background) using your favorite image editing program. You do not need to change anything else or know anything about Flash animation, HTML and CSS.

Here is what you need to do:
1. Download and install any of the new themes
2. Generate your gallery
3. Click the "Show created files" button
4. Select the file Site\images\WGW-0550-td.jpg, edit is as you please (e.g. add a greeting in the top left corner) and save it

That is it! Now the intro animation will show your own personalized message or background image.

If you are a user of our popular "Blackout" theme, install the new "Heart strings" theme and follow the instructions above. You can remove the heart string graphic and add your own using any image editor program.

NOTE: This process affects only the animation background and not the animation itself.

Adding a custom header and footer

Do you want to add your own text and images at the top and/or bottom of the Web Gallery pages? Our users often do this when they want to add a menu of links or contact information. Here’s how to do it.

See how others are using Web Gallery Wizard. Let them spark your imagination!

This month we are focusing on people that have edited their files to personalize their galleries. Renaissance Faires has implemented a number of navigation links to help with integration in the larger Web site. The Memorial for the firefighters at #10 in New York has framesets to add both header and footer information. The Racing Fanatics example sports a custom theme with the logo integrated in the gallery design.

Risks of photo-sharing sites

The Wall Street Journal reports the risks of photo-sharing sites

An article in the February 1, 2006 edition of The Wall Street Journal brought to light several issues with using online photo sharing sites, the most distressing of which is the potential loss of photos. The article recounts the experience of one man who tried to retrieve his pictures from one popular photo sharing site.

“When he emailed the company, he was told that his photos had been removed because there hadn’t been any order placed from his account for over a year, he recalls. ‘I told my wife, and she was on the verge of tears,’ he says. ‘My children were in shock.’”

Read the article in its entirety.

We also thought you might be interested in checking out “The Casualty List,” a Web page that documents photo sharing sites that have come and gone.

As a Web Gallery Wizard user, your photos are doubly protected. Because your Web Gallery files reside safely on your computer with a copy of the site uploaded to your Web host, you always have a “back up.”

If you know someone who is using a photo sharing service and might find this article of interest, input their email address and click the "Send To A Friend" button below.
